For Southeast Columbus families who want school to feel like something worth showing up for.  Your child learns best when he or she is doing something, not just listening. You know this. You've seen it at the kitchen table, in the backyard, in every moment where curiosity takes over.  Sagewood STEAM Academy is a tuition-free public charter school in Southeast Columbus, Ohio, serving Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school weaves STEAM concepts across every subject and uses project-based instruction to make learning active, not passive. With 1:1 Chromebook access, Smartboard technology in every classroom, and a small-school culture that treats every student as an individual, Sagewood gives your child a reason to be engaged.

It takes about 60 seconds. You've watched your child sit through school days that look the same week after week. Read the chapter. Answer the questions. Take the test. Repeat. You can see the energy draining out of him or her, and you're not sure whether it's the material or the method. Sagewood was built for the child who needs to do something with what he or she is learning in order for it to click.

What STEAM actually looks like in a classroom

It's not a separate class your child takes on Fridays. STEAM at Sagewood is threaded through core subjects. A math lesson becomes a design challenge. A science unit becomes an experiment students build with their hands. An art project becomes a vehicle for understanding engineering principles. Teachers use project-based instruction to connect subjects to real-world problems, so students see why what they're learning matters.

Small enough for your child to be known

This isn't a school where your child is a number. The building is small. The classes are small. The staff is small enough to notice when your child is having a rough day or a breakthrough one. Teachers don't just know names; they know patterns. They can tell when a student is stuck before the student says anything.

Technology in every classroom

Every student has 1:1 Chromebook access. Every classroom has Smartboard technology. These aren't substitutes for good teaching; they're tools that let teachers tailor lessons to each student, track progress in real time, and put resources in a student's hands that a textbook can't.

Support that wraps around the family

On-site counseling is available through North Community Counseling Centers. Social-emotional learning is part of the daily routine. After-school tutoring is available for students who need extra support, and the school partners with Bettering Our Youth for extended care so working families have coverage until 5:30 p.m. Family events run throughout the year: back-to-school bash, end-of-year celebrations, and graduation ceremonies.

Everything you just read? It costs nothing.

  •     Free yellow bus transportation through Columbus City Schools for eligible families.

Sagewood is funded by the state of Ohio. Your tax dollars already pay for it. Your child is spending six, seven hours a day in a school. Those hours are either building something or they're not. If you want a school where your child comes home with something to talk about, where the work feels like it matters, where the building is small enough that nobody slips through, this is worth a look.
